God Is In the Details of Our Lives

Christopher and I have had so many experiences throughout our marriage reaffirming that “God is in the details” of our lives.

Would you agree that it is sometimes hard to imagine that our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ would even care about some of the choices we are making?

God is in the Details

I will be honest and say that there are times when I wonder, “Is this really the right choice?” Those times are usually the result of hurdles that are in my way.

The pathway to following Christ is not, nor was it ever promised to be, burden and hurdle-free. I need to repeat that:

The pathway to following Christ is not, nor was it ever promised to be, burden and hurdle-free.

Chris and I can attest to that being true. BUT there is never a moment when God shelves us and offers a trite, “I’ll get back to you later.” It may feel like it as our answers don’t always come right away. Often, though, His purposes take time to accomplish.

When Chris and I were having a particularly trying time, I came across a quote one morning that was a great reminder to continue in faith:

“If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted it and lived for it, it is right now.”

Jeffrey R. Holland

David Bednar added his wise words in an address to students at Brigham Young University-Hawaii in 2012. He said:

As we consider so many of the things that are occurring all around us today, we could perhaps find ample reasons to be afraid, to hesitate, and to wonder if things in our lives can indeed turn out the way we have long hoped they would turn out.

…some of you may question or lack confidence in your own ability to succeed temporally and spiritually. Or perhaps you wonder if the Lord’s promises of support and guidance—which you readily recognize and acknowledge in the lives of so many other people—will likewise be evident in your life. You may be uncertain about pursuing an opportunity because you cannot foresee all of the details about how things will work out, and thus you are reticent to start and take the first steps on that path. Or you may be so concerned about making a mistake that you fail to act in faith and press forward, and you thereby increase the likelihood of the very failure you fear.

To not take counsel from our fears simply means that we do not permit fear and uncertainty to determine our course in life, to affect negatively our attitudes and behavior, to influence improperly our important decisions, or to divert or distract us from all in this world that is virtuous, lovely, or of good report.

To not take counsel from our fears means that faith in the Lord Jesus Christ overrules our fears and that we press forward with a steadfastness in Him. To not take counsel from our fears means that we trust in God’s guidance, assurance, and timing in our lives. I promise each of us can and will be blessed with direction, protection, and lasting joy as we learn to not take counsel from our fears.

As we exercise faith in Christ and trust in His promises, we can walk into the dark with the absolute assurance that our pathway will be illuminated—at least far enough to take the next step—and then the next step—and the next step. “Fear Not, I Am With TheeDecember 15, 2012

Yes, God is in the Details

Early in the Spring of 2020, God was mindful of my desire to plant potatoes in my garden. He provided a way for me to have seed potatoes when they were difficult to find in the circumstances of Covid-19. You can read about Bountiful Tender Mercies and 20 Seed Potatoes here.

Let me share a few more examples.

For the past number of years, Chris and I have had an extra twin bed in our guest room. I kept it there thinking it would come in handy some day, but it never really got used. One day last week a thought entered my mind, “You don’t really need that extra bed.” I mentioned this thought to Chris, and he agreed. I planned to see if any of my local friends on Facebook were in need of a bed.

I posted the offer and within minutes a friend commented, “I’ll take it.”

My friend, Melanie, and I made arrangements for her to come and pick up the bed. As we lifted the mattress, the box spring, and the bed frame out to her suburban, she commented that they had just taken in her 3-year old nephew who had been removed from an abusive home environment. She said, “We just needed another bed.”

I love how God is in the details of our lives. I could have gotten rid of the twin bed at any time over the past couple of years, and yet, He knew it would be needed today.

A second example comes from my friend, Cosette, who is serving along side her mission president husband in Brazil. She shares this experience:

“As many of you know, Zack was sent home from his mission due to Covid. Or, we sometimes like to tell him…the whole world had to have a pandemic so he could help us move to Brazil.

“Back in April, he was praying what to do. He kept feeling he should go to Brazil with us. It didn’t make sense to him, but he listened to the prompting and moved with us to do online school and help in the mission until he could [return to his mission]. For months he’s been working with area medical and other leaders to get back… But things just weren’t falling into place.

“During this time, the basketball court in the park right next to our house in Brazil opened, so Zack started playing basketball at night. This is where he met Lucas. Lucas loves basketball, but not many play here so he has to bike 30 minutes to play. It happens to be at the park right next to our house. It also happens to be the only place Zack has gone alone since we’ve been here.

“Zack and Lucas became friends and Zack invited him to church. Luke was so excited! For years he has walked past the church, has seen missionaries and wanted to know more, but didn’t know how.

“After lessons with the missionaries the last few weeks, Lucas got baptized yesterday and made covenants to follow Christ. We love Lucas!! You should see him!  He has a light that shines! Lucas laughed with Zack that God sent him all the way to Brazil so he could share this truth with him.

“And…it’s not by coincidence that Zack found out the other day that he has now been reassigned to go back to the Fresno, California mission soon! Thankfully Zack and Lucas can still keep in touch through technology.

Final Thoughts on God is in the Details

God is in the details of the details of the details and cares deeply about each one of us.

I’m amazed at how carefully God takes care of each of us and coordinates the details of our lives.

I had an epiphany the other day about God being in the details of our lives. He IS because the details matter so much to us: they weigh heavy on our hearts, they cause us to lie awake at night, they bring us sorrow. God knows.

Beautiful post Jolayne! I completely agree that God is in the details and cares about every part of our lives. As my husband and I have walked through some deep dark valleys these past 6 years, knowing and believing in God’s sovereignty had brought so much peace. Thanks for your rich words of truth!
